Recognizing symbols

Doe anyone have any experience in training their BC to recognize numbers or symbols on a page. For example Bart my BC has several favorite toys. I have taken a color picture and then pasted it on a plywood cutout of the toy. Then I show him the cutout and ask him to retrieve the toy. The reverse is trained as well, I show him the toy and ask him to touch the cutout.
